Val Verde Regional Medical Center Welcomes Dr. Olutayo Sogunro, D.O., M.S., General Surgery

Dr. Sogunro joins VVRMC from Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio where she was honing her skills as a surgeon. She covers the full spectrum of general surgery but specializes in breast cancer surgery, colon surgery and endocrine (thyroid and parathyroid) surgery. “I will be ready to see new patients starting August 1st,” she said.

Dr. Sogunro is well traveled. She was born in Nigeria, moved to Edmonton, Alberta as a young child and then went to high school in Connecticut. She attended Medical School in Blacksburg, Virginia and completed her residency in Ohio.

“I have wanted to be a doctor since I was eight years old,” she said with a smile, “the only other things I have wanted to be were a Marine Biologist or an Astronaut. I gave up on Marine Biology because I don’t swim and when I found out Astronauts sometimes don’t return from space; I chose being a doctor.”

Her love of science and her desire to help people be well drove her to medicine. “I love anatomy,” she said, “I love discovering new things. I want to help people feel better.” When she first contacted Val Verde Regional Medical Center about a position she felt it was a good fit. “Everyone was organized and kind. When I came to interview and heard about the hospital’s philosophy that community health is our health, I felt that the beliefs of the hospital meshed with my own.”

VVRMC welcomes Dr. Sogunro to our hospital and our community. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Sogunro, call 830-282-6020.
