Regulatory Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Current State of Texas EMT or AEMT
  • Current state driver’s license and excellent driving record.

Job Summary: Responsible for the assessment and basic management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies under the supervision of on or off-line medical control. Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the ED Registered Nurse.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

1. In the field the EMT-Basic responsibilities include: triage, CPR, oxygen therapy, shock prevention, splinting, spinal immobilization and vehicular extrication.

2. Ability to establish patient airway with oral or naso-pharyngeal airway.

3. Able to ventilate a patient with mask/ambu bag when necessary.

4. Ability to suction oral secretions when necessary.

5. Immobilizes extremities on trauma patients; applies direct pressure to control hemorrhaging.

6. Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.

7. Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.

8. Adheres to Ambulance policies addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.

9. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.

10. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.

11. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

12. Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, care and observations.

13. Transports patient and supplies safely.

14. Maintains ambulance supplies and equipment.

15. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Additional duties if employed in the Hospital Emergency Department:

16. Provides supportive care to Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician. Performs approved procedures per policy.

17. Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member; supports and assists team members in all activities.

18. Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all coworkers, patients and physicians.
