Minimum Entry Level Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or the equivalent.
  2. EMT Basic certification or obtain certification within 1 year of hire.
  3. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  4. Basic computer knowledge.
  5. Word processing.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs emergency medical dispatcher courteously receives telephone calls and processes maximum information in minimum time. Quickly and accurately assigns and dispatches appropriate EMS units. Timely and accurately utilizes computer aided dispatch system for complaint processing and unit dispatching. Meets communication needs of the department. Maintains regulatory body requirements, policies and procedures and participates in performance improvement activities.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.
  2. Quickly, accurately, and courteously receives telephone calls and processes maximum information in minimum time.
  3. Quickly and accurately assigns and dispatches appropriate EMS units for emergency calls.
  4. Quickly and accurately assigns and dispatches appropriate EMS units for non emergency calls.
  5. Timely and accurately utilizes computer aided dispatch system for complaint processing, unit dispatching, and pre-arrival instructions.
  6. Quickly and accurately gives pre-arrival instructions to callers.
  7. Assist providers with flight following for air missions.
  8. Arranges non-emergency local and long distance patient transfers.
  9. Work overtime as required.
  10. Performs Office tasks as assigned.
  11. Compiles with all policies and procedures of the hospital and department both written, and/or implied.
  12. Communicates clearly and concisely to co-workers, physicians and nurses.
  13. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  14. Interacts professionally with co-workers and other healthcare providers.
  15. Attends all meetings.
  16. Attends all training.
  17. Interacts professionally with co-workers and other healthcare providers.
  18. Communicates ideas for improvement to the Supervisor or Director.
  19. Reflects knowledge and judgment in decisions and actions within the job description of the Dispatcher
  20. Demonstrates the ability to work the switchboard.
  21. Demonstrates the ability to work the web/messenger
  22. Performs other related duties as assigned.
